A Report to Constituents from Bob Kilger, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh On May 18, 2000, I was honoured to rise in the House of Commons to deliver the following statement acknowledging the significant undertaking of Williamstown artist Esther Bryan: Mr. Bob Kilger (Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh, Lib.): "Mr. Speaker, artist Esther Bryan, a resident of my riding of Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and participants from across Canada, is bringing to life an immense textile artwork entitled, 'Invitation', a reflection of Canada's cultural fabric and history. All ethnocultural groups, Inuit and First Nations communities within Canada are each contributing to a handmade textile block of traditional materials and designs symbolizing their unique contribution to our Canadian identity. This quilt of belonging is a work in progress. Many completed blocks will be on display at five o'clock this afternoon in the Centre Block Hall of Honour. I invite all Members of Parliament to join the Canadian Ethnocultural Council and the Board of the Invitation Quilt to participate in the national launch of this project. A special congratulations to artist Esther Bryan for her vision and commitment to this very special millennium project." Later that day, I joined with the hundreds of invited guests to view this wonderful 'work in progress', and I have to tell you that it is truly impressive. The completed quilt will measure 80 feet long by 20 feet high and is destined to hang in our Museum of Civilization. The samples of the finished squares on display in the Hall of Honour were varied, beautiful and truly remarkable. I can only imagine the number of hours of work that have gone into Esther's personal millennium project to date, both by Esther herself and the many volunteers and participants dedicated to bringing her dream to reality.
On behalf of Esther, I invite you to drop by the former Williamstown Municipal Office to see this splendid project yourself. Contributions in many forms are very welcomed and I'm certain that you will be impressed as well.
